The pumping and distilling are done by the Baxter engine and boiler.

Sounded at noon in 27 fathoms. Muddy bottom. No drift indicated by the lead line. At 3am occasional 
cracking sound from the ice near the ship.
Weather generally overcast and gloomy, with occasional fog, and, toward midnight very light snow. 
Water sky from N.E. around by S. to S.W. Light variable winds, falling barometer and low temperature.
