Collection Methodology
Logbooks were scanned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through a cooperative agreement with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The scanned data and text were transcribed through a crowd-sourcing citizen science initiative, Old Weather (a Zooniverse project). Each logbook page was transcribed by three separate volunteers. Inconsistencies between numeric entries were resolved by way of scripts that searched for uniformity. Text entries were edited and reconciled manually by editors.
