Shortly after midnight the key worked out of the wheel center of the wind mill, necessitating the 
resumption of pumping by the steam cutters engine in connection with the main engine bilge pump. 
Commenced making a new key and additional support to the wheel center of the wind mill.
At 9am discontinued the use of the steam cutters engine and commenced using the Baxter engine in 
connection with the shifted bilge pump in the corner of the fire room hatch, and also for distilling.

Sounded at noon in 31 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A drift to west being indicated by the lead line. Sunrise 
at 1.35. Sunset at 10.30. At sunrise a parhelion 22° in radius.
A gull flew by the ship, bound to the westward.
Until 10.55pm weather clear, light and pleasant, the sky during the afternoon being absolutely cloudless. 
At 10.55pm an opening occurred in the ice to the S.E. and immediately the sky and all objects 100 yards 
from the ship were hidden by a thick fog which continued as these 24 hours closed. Almost steady 
easterly wind with moderate force, slightly falling followed by slightly rising barometer; with sudden fall of 
temperature just before the fog, and succeeding sudden rise.
