Latitude by observation at noon Sun N. 72° 59' 54" Water expended during the preceding 24 hours: 35 gallons Water distilled during the preceding 24 hours: 35 gallons Coal consumed during the preceding 24 hours: 400 lbs Coal remaining on hand at noon: 64 tons 1383 lbs Maximum temperature indicated by B.B. in vacuo = 96° between noon and 1pm Until 3pm the pumping forward is done by hand at the spar deck bilge pump and aft by the steam cutters engine driving the main engine bilge pump. The steam cutter's boiler is also used for distilling. At 3pm the wind mill being mounted in place it was connected with the shifted bilge pump in the corner of the fire room hatch, and set to work. Finding that it did well, the pumping forward by hand was discontinued, the starboard gate opened in the forward water tight bulkhead, and the water allowed to flow aft. Up to midnight the wind mill pump was doing all the pumping. Water in the ship to day at 8am at 4pm at midnight At water tight bulkhead 7 inches 7 inches 4 inches At fire room bilge 2 inches 1 inch 8 inches Sounded at noon in 31 1/2 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A drift to N.W. being indicated by the lead line. Weather overcast and gloomy until 11pm when it partially cleared. Misty and foggy generally with occasional fall of very light snow. Easterly winds with falling barometer and pleasant temperature. Moon 22° 28' S. Full moon
