The steam cutter's boiler is also used for distilling. Water in the ship to day at 8am at 4pm at midnight At water tight bulkhead 7 inches 7 inches 7 inches At fire room bilge 2 inches 3 inches 2 inches Sounded at noon in 33 1/2 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A drift to N.N.W. being indicated by the lead line. Weather gloomy and dull. Sky overcast, with an almost steady fall of light snow. Water sky at times between E. and S. Light southerly and easterly winds with slightly falling barometer and pleasant temperature. At 11.30pm a bear came to within half a mile of the ship, but being pursued, managed to escape. Carpenters engaged in fitting tins to wind-mill instead of ordinary sails. Crew engaged generally in work about the ship. Moon 24° 20' S. Full moon
