The pumping forward is done by hand at the spar deck bilge pump, and aft by the steam cutters engine 
driving the main engine bilge pump. The steam cutter's boiler is also used in distilling.

Sounded at noon in 37 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A drift to N.N.W. being indicated by the lead line. A 
measure of the floe at the sounding hole gave 40 inches thickness.
Weather gloomy, sky overcast and light snow falling nearly all day. Light winds from between E. and S. 
with rising barometer and pleasant temperature.
Crew engaged in cleaning up generally about the ship.
Much water sky, and vapor arising from ice openings, chiefly between E. and south.
