Coal consumed during the preceding 24 hours: 170 lbs
Coal remaining on hand at noon: 56 tons 978 lbs 

The pumping is done by hand at the quarter deck bilge pump, and the distilling is done by the steam 
cutter's boiler. 
Sounded in 23 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A drift to west being indicated by the lead line. Lowered and 
hauled the dredge.
Dressed ship with Union Jack forward. Ensigns at mast heads and flag staff and rainbow of signal flags 
in honor of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Gloomy and disagreeable weather. Thick fog until toward midnight. Light north-easterly and easterly 
wind with a slight fall in barometer and slight increase of temperature.
Crew engaged in collecting melting ice from the surface of the hummocks to be used if possible for 
cooking and drinking.
