Sounded at noon in 23 1/2 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A rapid drift to S.S.E. being indicated by the lead line. 
Lowered and hauled the dredge.
Crew engaged in painting outside of ship and in various occupations inboard.
Stiff N.W. winds with occasional hard squalls. Light snow-flurries occasionally. Slowly rising barometer 
and nearly uniform temperature.
