The "boiler tube pump" being completed was placed in position alongside of the shifted bilge pump in 
the corner of the fire room hatch, and being connected with the wind mill did all the pumping in a 
satisfactory manner. 
The Baxter boiler is used for distilling.

The streams of water running into the shaft alley, as before noted, having somewhat diminished, it is 
believed that the occurrence is due to a thawing of the ice among the frames.
In order to further economize fuel, the fires in the cabin and on the berth deck are discontinued between 
9am and 6pm each day, when the temperature of the open air is considered suitable as for instance 
yesterday and today.
Sounded at noon in 32 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A slight N.N.W. drift being indicated by the lead line.
Weather clear and pleasant during forenoon, cloudy and gloomy during afternoon. Light easterly airs 
followed by light southerly breeze. Rising barometer and comfortable temperature. Heavy "water sky" all 
around the horizon.
Crew engaged in restowing boatswains stores; carpenters occupied in making keel runners for boats 
and in repairing water closets; and engineer's force attending to locating and connecting boiler tube 
pump.
