Latitude by observation at noon Sun N. 73° 10' 46" Water expended during the preceding 24 hours: 35 gallons Water distilled during the preceding 24 hours: 35 gallons Coal consumed during the preceding 24 hours: 400 lbs Coal remaining on hand at noon: 63 tons 1373 lbs Maximum temperature indicated by B.B. in vacuo = 105.7° between noon & 1pm The pumping and distilling are done by the Baxter engine. Water in the ship to day at 8am at 4pm at midnight At fire room bilge 11 1/2 inches 16 inches 6 inches Sounded at noon in 31 fathoms. Muddy bottom, a rapid drift to the S.E. being indicated by the lead line. Weather generally raw and unpleasant. Fresh N.W. breezes, light snow and snow flurries. Rising barometer. Much water sky all around horizon. About 3 miles S.E. of the ship there was a lane of open water about 100 yards in width and a mile or so in length, at which a number of birds had gathered. At 4pm a bear came to 200 yards from the ship, but though shot at and hit, managed to get to and beyond the open water when being fired at he suddenly disappeared. Moon 5° 46' N. Last quarter
