Forward spar deck bilge pump is kept running about one half the time at the rate of 40 strokes per 
minute; and the main engine bilge pump is kept going by the steam cutters engine and boiler about 15 
minutes every hour, the remainder of the time being used in distilling.

Dressed ship at sunrise with national ensign at mastheads and flag staff and Union Jack forward in 
honor of the anniversary of the birthday of Washington.
Sounded at noon in 33 fathoms, mud and gravel. No drift indicated by lead lines. Ice formed 5 inches in 
thickness over sounding hole since yesterday. Early daylight at 4.40am. Open water one half mile from 
ship to the S'd.
At 1am lunar circle. Faint auroral streamer in N.E. Vapor rising from the ice to the S.W. and S.E. at 4pm 
and 5pm. At 10pm faint auroral arch in N.; at midnight low flat arch 5° in altitude extending from N.E. to 
N.W.
A bear came near the ship at midnight but was frightened away by the dogs before he could be shot at.
