The steam cutter's boiler is used for distilling. Sounded in 26 1/2 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A slight drift to S.S.W. being indicated by the lead line. Weather clear, bright and cold. Light northerly airs, cloudless sky after 3pm, and nearly steady barometer. At 3am faint auroral arch to S'd 8° in altitude; at 6am 3 auroral arches visible extending from E. to W., one through zenith, another 40° S. and the third 20° in altitude south. At 11pm and midnight brilliant lunar halo showing deep colored and clearly distinct prismatic colors. Moon 10° N. First quarter
