The steam cutter's boiler is used for distilling. Sounded in 27 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A slight drift to S.W. being indicated by the lead line. Weather clear, bright and pleasant, although a little hazy at the beginning and ending of the day. Light northerly airs, slightly falling barometer and low temperature. A bear was sighted from the ship, at considerable distance, and chased by men and dogs without success. At 3am faint auroral arch 60° in altitude to the S'd. At 6pm there was a magnificent lunar halo, 5° in diameter showing vivid prismatic colors in clearly defined circles. Sounds of grinding ice to the southward. Moon 5° N. First quarter
