Sounded at noon in 28 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A slight drift to west being indicated by the lead line. A 
measurement of the thickness of the ice floe at that point gave 45 inches being an increase of 5 inches 
on the measurement made on April 24th.
At 4am a bear came towards the ship from astern, but though pursued by men and dogs managed to 
escape. At [...] am another bear approached the ship from S'd and though fired at and wounded, and 
immediately chased by men and dogs also managed to escape.
The new crank shaft and center bearing of the wind mill being completed it was again set up and 
attached to the shifted bilge pump in the corner of the fire room hatch. Engineer's force at work making a 
small pump out of spare boiler tubes to be worked by the wind mill in light winds.
Crew engaged in general work about the ship, in digging out the trench, and in cleaning and stretching 
seal skins, in readiness for moccasins.
Weather overcast until toward noon when it became and continued clear and pleasant to midnight. Light 
easterly winds, rising barometer, and low temperature.
