The pumping generally is done by the wind mill pump; and for an hour in the afternoon the quarter deck 
bilge pumps are rigged and manned and all the water pumped out which lodged in the engine room 
abaft the suction of the wind mill pump.
The steam cutter's boiler is used for distilling.
Sounded in 39 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A slight drift S.S.E. (mag) being indicated by the lead line.
Weather dull and gloomy with occasional snow flurries. Light N.W. breezes, steady barometer and 
uniform temperature.
At 11am started a fire on the ice ahead of the ship, adding tar and oakum to make a black smoke as a 
signal of our location to the absent travelling party. At 4pm the weather being foggy, fired a charge from 
the "brass gun" and one from a "whale gun" as a similar signal.
At 5pm a bear came near the ship from the leeward, but escaped unhurt though fired at and chased.
Crew engaged in digging away the ice under the stern. 
Carpenter finished repairs to steam cutter.
