The steam cutter's boiler is used for distilling. Sounded in 35 fathoms. Muddy bottom. A drift to W.S.W. being indicated by the lead line. At 11am a large bear coming near the ship was chased and brought to by the dogs until shot by Mr. Dunbar at a distance of about one-third of a mile from the ship. When brought alongside it was measured and found to be 7 feet 11 inches in length from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail; 5 feet 9 inches in girth abaft the fore shoulders; and to have a weight of 943 1/2 pounds. Weather overcast and gloomy all day until midnight, when the sky cleared somewhat, showing a few stars and disclosing auroral patches between north and north-east, at an altitude of 15° above the horizon.
